Auto Insurance FAQs—Including SR-22 Filing

Coverage basics—including Rental Car Benefits & SR-22 Filing

Insurance is complicated and we are always happy to explain your policy coverage to you. That's what we're here for! But if you'd just like to refresh yourself on some terms, please scroll down, or click on the Auto Insurance coverage you are interested in below:

Liability Coverage:

Liability coverage is represented as a series of numbers, such as 25/50/25. These are limits, in thousands of dollars, that the company will pay out: $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident for bodily injury (BI) sustained by the other party, plus up to $25,000 for property damage (PD). Payment is made when you are determined legally responsible. This coverage also pays for your legal costs if you are sued. Generally, you should carry limits equal to your net worth. If your net worth exceeds the highest auto liability limits of $250,000/$500,000, please call us about an umbrella policy.

Uninsured Motorist:

Uninsured Motorist (UM)/Underinsured Motorist coverage pays when you are hit by an uninsured driver or a driver with inadequate liability insurance coverage. Payments include bodily injury, property damage, or your deductible. Please note, Uninsured Motorist can also mean Underinsured Motorist when it comes to bodily injury.

What are Comprehensive & Collision Coverages?

Comprehensive & Collision provide coverage for the repair of your car. Collision coverage pays for damage to your car when your car is in an accident. Comprehensive coverage (also known as "other than collision" coverage) covers everything that is not covered under collision, such as fire, theft, falling objects, vandalism, etc. Comprehensive and Collision each carry their own deductibles.

How does the Deductible work?

The Deductible is the amount you pay to have your vehicle repaired in a covered loss. The insurance company covers the ACV (actual cash value) amount of your car over your deductible.

What is the Collision Deductible Waiver?

The Collision Deductible Waiver waives your collision deductible if you are hit by an uninsured motorist.

What is Towing Coverage?

Each full-coverage vehicle on a Mercury Insurance policy is now automatically covered for no additional expense. Towing & Labor reimburses you for expenses (up to $75 per incident) to transport your car to a repair facility. This includes coverage for a dead-battery charge or tire change.

What is the Medical Coverage?

Medical Payments coverage reimburses you and your passengers for medical or funeral expenses arising from an accident, regardless of who was responsible for the accident. It is generally written in small amounts, i.e. $1,000 per person, since it is merely intended to pay the bills not covered by other insurance.

What is Rental Car Insurance?

Rental Car coverage reimburses you for your use of a rental car (usually with a limit of $30 or $40 for 30 days) while your car is being repaired under a covered loss.

What is an SR-22?

An SR-22 is a form that shows that you have auto insurance. It is required by the state for drivers who are high risk. This form issued by an insurance company which removes a suspension order placed by the DMV on your driving priviledge. The filing provides a guarantee to the California Department of Motor Vehicles that an insurance company has issued at least minimum liability coverage for the person making that filing; AND — that the insurance company will notify the DMV should the insurance ever lapse for any reason.
